Clarity begins with a governing idea.Structure your thinking. Strengthen your writing.
Writing is a thinking discipline. Governing Idea helps you do the work — not skip it.
Created by a former CIO with a master's from Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English — and experience teaching the Pyramid Principle to new hires at McKinsey.
Why It Matters
Most writing tools polish sentences. Governing Idea strengthens the thinking behind them.
Clear writing comes from clear structure — a governing idea, a logical argument, and a message leaders can act on.
This platform teaches you that structure step by step, then helps you apply it to your own real‑world documents.
How It Works
Governing Idea is grounded in the Pyramid Principle. The platform includes a structured three-module curriculum:
- Module 1: The Pyramid Principle. Twenty-five mini lessons covering the core concepts — governing idea, SCQA, MECE, horizontal and vertical logic, and the three-pass editorial framework. Read short passages, then answer diagnostic questions before moving on.
- Module 2: From Draft to Argument. Apply what you've learned to a real business document using the Socratic method. Diagnose each structural problem yourself, then see the expert analysis revealed.
- Module 3: Write Your Document. Write a Pyramid Principle document from scratch with AI checks at each milestone — introduction, body sections, and conclusion. The AI tells you where your structure breaks down. It does not write for you.
You can retake any module as many times as you want. Your most recent attempt is what's saved. There's no penalty for trying — only practice.
